Welcome to Inspiring leadership: a series about helping us become better leaders and better humans.
A series in which I will cover:
behaviours that are linked to being a more effective leader, a colleague, a partner, a human;
behaviours that reduce leadership effectiveness;
beliefs that drive these corresponding behaviours;
what we can do to tweak, add to, or replace, these beliefs, to influence our behaviours and our results.
“Leadership? Not for me!”
I know, this word can be overused. And if you aren’t in a conventional leadership role - hang on. Yes, I’ll be using “leadership” language, but what we will be really exploring are concepts from adult development, which help us map the thinking of people who can effectively navigate the complexities of the world and be a source of inspiration for others. Adults who can be patient when needed and positively impatient when required; who can hold multiple perspectives of good and bad; who can be both demanding and caring at the same time. Adults whose mindset corresponds with business results that are 50-100% higher than of those who are less developed.
I believe you will benefit from this series no matter what professional role you’re in because unproductive behaviours (for example, overcontrolling or trying to please) can show up in any area of your life.
Beliefs | behaviours | results + our map for this series
As you may have noticed from other texts (e.g. Introduction to Inner Critics), I often work with inner dialogues. How we talk to ourselves about goals, unmet expectations, disagreements, wins and losses has a huge influence on how we approach what’s next.
But sometimes these beliefs are hard to verbalise and therefore to recognise, sometimes they exist within us as feelings, emotions or expressed via behaviours.
This is why I’m excited to use the Leadership Circle Profile® - LCP* as the map to cover these areas. It is a powerful tool that assesses:
leadership behaviours
beliefs underneath the behaviours
statistically links behaviours to business results and leadership effectiveness of over 460,000 real leaders who’ve gone through it
A note on tools and models: I believe that no single model can capture the whole complexity of us being humans, but with the right guidance, LCP can be a very useful map to guide our reflection and consciously choose our path of development.
Inspire you and for you to inspire others
I have several goal as I write this series:
Inspire you to continue growing: allowing all three - nature, nurture and your intentionto shape who you become. In the words of Leadership Circle, we can accelerate our development and I hope this series will help you accelerate yours.
My second goal is to offer you a map for personal and professional development that you can use for the next 5-10 years.
My third goal is that by growing yourself, you will inspire others to develop in their own way. I’ve witnessed, with great pleasure, this ripple effect many times.
In the next post, I will give you an overview of the LCP and several options for how you can use it throughout this series.
Hope you will enjoy this journey together.
